"20xx has been the worst year ever"
"20xx has been the worst year ever"

It seems to be the trend at the moment that when reflecting on the past year around new years, to be as negative as possible, whilst simultaneously posting a collection of self gratifying pictures on Snapchat or Instagram to show just what a great year you've had. This trend has been popular for quite a while now and I suppose it make you more interesting to appear outwardly negative and critical of events that happened within a given time frame. Maybe it's just the fact that I'm getting older and the people around me are becoming increasingly more self aware and their hopeless optimism on how their lives will pan out is waning.

Maybe it's just the fact that I'm getting older and the people around me are becoming increasingly more self aware and their hopeless optimism on how their lives will pan out is waning.
It could also be the fact that verification on how strong you are for keeping going through such hard year is extremely important to some people; And to be honest I don't blame them. The trouble is that for people to achieve this verification at a satisfactory level they need to quietly show-off. This has become a real art for some people and the "20xx has been the worst year ever" line is an easy entry into this. Most people can see through this obvious bate of course but who would dare call them out, after all they have had "such a hard year". Oh well what's the harm in social gallants gaining a bit more attention anyway.
Setting up your life so you divide time into years is a way to almost guarantee the ability to say "20xx has been the worst year ever". Simply look back over the previous three hundred a sixty five days and choose any collection of undefined periods time where life didn't go as you planned and there you go, you can make a a moany statement on your Snapchat storey. This isn't me trying to bash people for feeling emotional about genuinely traumatic experiences and then seeking sympathy in order to reconcile their thoughts. However I'm sure most people find petty wining on social media to be largely annoying. You could argue that this is of the same sort latterly mentioned, to that I would argue that I'm not forcing this down your throat and anyone reading this is doing so out of their own curiosity.
You may also consider this behaviour to part of most peoples natural fixation on trying to fit in. This isn't really a problem in its self, but it does affect peoples behaviour, usually in a negative way. Reflecting on your year through social media is generally something people desiring to have themselves perceived in a certain manner will do, and whilst most peoples picture albums are generally wholesome, self pitying paras are just boring and tasteless. I understand that people don't want to be perceived as arrogant but you can write an interesting summary of the events within the last year without self-deprecating and whining about hard your life is, that will still get you the desired attention.
To conclude this, I wrote this whilst in the huff about having no one to hang out with on new years eve, as well as having consumed a reasonable quantity of tequila and beer. the last to paragraphs were written on the date of posting and to be perfectly honest there's more important things in the world to be upset about. If you are one of the people who like to write stuff like this on Facebook, all the power to you, I mean no harm by this.
